With the advent of the Asterisk GUI, the Asterisk developers found it would be helpful to create a configuration file where user accounts can be specified, instead of having different pieces spread across a myriad of files (such as extensions.conf, sip.conf, and voicemail.conf. This file is also updated by the Asterisk GUI when new users are added to the system or when user settings are modified.
